Conservation works begin on historic chapel

CONSERVATION works have started in order to preserve the ruins of a 13th Century chapel.

Scaffolding has been put up at the Thomas A Becket chapel in Brentwood High Street and specialists Bakers of Danbury are carrying out repairs on the scheduled ancient monument, overseen by English Heritage.

The work is being done to ensure the chapel is preserved for years to come. A crack has also appeared in a corner of the tower, and this will be repaired.

The conservation repairs are expected to take six to eight weeks to complete, meanwhile access to the ruins will be limited by a cordon.

Phil Baker, chairman of Brentwood Council's culture, leisure and sport panel, said: "This conservation work is badly needed to ensure the chapel's survival for another generation of Brentwood residents.

"I am pleased to be working with our partners including Father Bob White, of St Thomas's Church and John Fryer, local historian and curator of Brentwood museum to promote awareness of the chapel's importance to our history and heritage."
