Council asks for residents views on travellers sites

A TOTAL of 18 sites in Brentwood borough are to be considered for gipsy and traveller pitches as part of a Government plan.

Sites including William Hunter Way, the old A12 works site at Ingatestone and the Chep site on the A127 are amongst those which have been suggested by residents and groups following a consultation exercise late last year.

Brentwood Council is having to compile a document dealing with accommodation for travellers in the borough.

Residents will now be asked to give their views on those sites listed. A consultation process is likely to begin in late May or early June.

The council is reluctant to comment on any of the sites, many of which have been suggested by the Gipsy and Traveller Working Group.

Brandon Lewis, leader of Brentwood Council, said: "The council does not have any preferred sites nor is it saying that there should be any gipsy and traveller site in Brentwood without further research first being carried out.

"The Government office has advised this consultation be carried out so that the sites previously suggested by residents can be considered by the public."

Information on the issue will be sent to every home and will be available online or from the town hall and other public buildings.

There are currently no authorised gipsy and traveller sites in Brentwood, but last year the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA) recommended that the borough should have 15 available pitches.

However, Mr Lewis added: "There is no definition of what a pitch is. At this stage the Government is going to have to think about giving clear guidance on exactly what a pitch is, it could be a caravan or a whole family."
