Job vacancies for graduates have soared, growing by almost a third in the previous year alone.

At the same time, average salaries have risen for the first time since the start of the worldwide recession in 2008.

A survey by Adzuna agency shows there were 823,081 advertised vacancies in April 2014, compared to 687,167 in April 2013. It was the third consecutive month in which total vacancies have topped the 800,000 mark.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “This month’s labour market reads like a recipe for success.

“There are far more job opportunities than 12 months ago, with graduates in particular benefitting as employers begin advertising for far more staff.”

April 2014 figures showed average salaries for entry level graduates had climbed 1.2 per cent on March, to reach an average level of £32,185.

In the science sector, salaries rose at a much faster rate, with advertised salaries increasing 7.1 per cent year-on- year in April to £36,249

Mr Hunter added: “The salary rise is the first indicator graduates are starting to deploy their skills in a sellers’ market. This is helping improve household finances, which in turn is boosting the economy further.

“The science sector is roaring back into life, contributing to both production and employment levels.

“Nearly half of all graduate opportunities are focused in London and the South East.”
