DON’T Look Now at the Civic Theatre in Chelmsford until Saturday January 31.

DON’T Look Now is a psychological thriller - based on a short story by Daphne Du Maurier and set in the beautiful city of Venice. .

It is most familiar as the classic 1973 film starring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland.

It tells the story of married couple John and Laura.

They have recently lost their six year old daughter Christine to meningitis and have come away for a trip to Venice - where they honeymooned ten years ago.

As they are sitting having a drink - the couple see on a table close by two rather strange women and they both utter the lines - Don't Look Now.

Nicola Bryant is particularly good as the vunerable Laura who is trying to come to terms with what has happened and who strikes up a relationship with the two women who are in fact sisters. One is played by the veteran actress Shirley Anne Field.

John is played by former Emmerdale favourite Peter Amory who as he explains "is a man - and I have to act like a man, keeping it altogether."

Running alongside this is a series of grisly murders in Venice of tourists that the police are trying to keep quiet.

John becomes concerned about the effect one of the sisters played by Claire Vousden who is blind and psychic is having on his wife.

The stage production is tense and at times funny and the steamy bedroom scene - made famous in the film -is also brilliantly done.

The set is also first class - trying to conjure up the feel of Venice on a stage is no mean feat.
