The most difficult and daunting part for many families who are looking to go on holiday is making sure they choose the right resort. This isn't always the easiest of things, because if it's a trip into the unknown, holidaymakers have to rely a lot on brochure and travel guide information, word of mouth and the internet. • Cala Millor - Majorca.

  A firm favourite with British holidaymakers for many, many years, Cala Millor has a great choice of accommodation and is very friendly and family focussed. It has a main promenade which is perfect for taking a relaxing stroll along and also links to the neighbouring resort of Cala Bona which is approximately 10 minutes away on foot. The resort has a wide choice of restaurants that cater for a wide range of tastes as well as one of the best beaches on the island. At the beach, which has a wide stretch of soft sand to enjoy, you will find some awe-inspiring sand sculptures that the artists spend much of the day working on.

• Es Cana - Ibiza.

  Es Cana is one of Ibiza's main resorts and perfectly suited for families. It's lovely harbour is surrounded by cute, whitewashed houses which look out across the beautiful, sweeping stretch of beach, which has the added safety of lifeguards manning it. The resort exudes an authentic aura and is nearby to a massively popular hippy market where you're sure to find a special and unique gift to take home with you. Many tourists regard the market as a big highlight of their trip to Ibiza. Es Cana has an excellent choice of water sport activities too, as well as being near to S'Argamassa, which is another family resort.

• Cala'n Forcat - Menorca.

  This resort has become increasingly popular over the years and is part of a continuous holiday zone that also comprises the resort of Cala'n Blanes, both of which are great for finding cheap Balearic Island holidays. It's a great choice if you want an upbeat family atmosphere on an otherwise quiet island. There is a choice of sandy coves to choose from and the resort restaurants serve a range of food from seafood to fast food. The main aqua park is very nearby, as is the island's historic capital Ciudadela which has good shopping opportunities.
