Herongate impress Warren Barton

FORMER Newcastle and England defender Warren Barton hailed the performance of Herongate after the Essex girls booked a dream day out at the UK Final of the Tesco Cup later this month.

The Essex County League under-14 side, who were representing the Essex FA at the Southern England Regional Final day in Roehampton, saw off the challenge of London representatives Tottenham Hotspur in the final on Saturday afternoon.

Gary Brinkley's talented youngsters beat Tottenham 1-0 to crown an impressive day's work that saw them win all three group matches to reach the final.

Herongate will now line up in the Cup UK Final at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 18 and Barton believes some of the current crop have the talent to go a long way in the game.

"The standard was very high and I think the best teams ended up in the final," said Barton.

"The plan is to see some of these players progress to the highest level. It would be great in a couple of years time if someone who played here goes on to play at the top level just to prove what can be done.

"There are a lot of talented players here and I'm confident we won't be hearing the last of some of them."

There was further success for the Essex side with Barton handpicking Beth Grainger as the goalkeeper of the tournament and selecting Yazmin Nugent for the prestigious top midfielder award.

Barton added: "Beth was superb between the sticks and was a key factor in Herongate's strong defence. Yazmin was a real star. She pulled the strings in midfield and was the catalyst for everything her side did."
