New chief vows to beat "transient" crooks

POLICE are to get tougher on people who come to Brentwood to commit crime, according to the borough's new chief inspector.

Chief Insp Keith Dobson took up his new post last week and has targeted criminals travelling into the borough from outside.

He plans to use mobile Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology on the key gateways in and out of Brentwood to track offenders.

Mr Dobson also wants to make more use of forensic techniques to identify offenders.

Mr Dobson said: "Brentwood is one of the safest boroughs to live in in Essex and it is true that much of the crime committed is committed by what I call transient criminals.

"These are people from outside of the borough who are coming in and targeting the people who live and work in this area and that may be due to Brentwood being an affluent community.

"I want to tactfully use mobile ANPR on some of the arterial roads and communication links in the borough to try and capture some of the criminals that may be travelling in. I'll also be asking for support from our mobile support division.

"I also want to increase forensic opportunities where we can make clever use of the evidence that we get from crime scenes."

In addition, Mr Dobson also signalled his intention to use dispersal orders in parts of the borough to deal with youth nuisance and antisocial behaviour.

"There are antisocial behaviour occurrences here and there is a need for a dispersal order in particular areas within Brentwood," he added.

"However, I want to reassure the community that the order is aimed at those that cause trouble. Anybody just passing through that does not offend have nothing to fear from the police. I don't want people to think police are just going around stopping and searching everyone."
