Fury at slur on Essex
ESSEX has failed to impress the authors of the latest Rough Guide to England after it was described as "unappetising" by the popular travel guide.
The guide describes the county as an "unappetising commuter strip" because of its proximity to London.
The book stated: "Amidst the suburban gloom, there are however several worthwhile destinations, most notably Colchester and the handsome hamlets of the bucolic Stour River Valley."
Ray Howard, Essex County Councillor, said the assessment was "disgraceful" and "unnecessary".
He added: "The person who wrote this has obviously never even been to Essex.
"I've lived here all my life and am proud to be an Essex man.
"Our county has some of the most attractive women. We've got 350 miles of beautiful coastline, rural and urban areas.
"It's a wonderful part of the world."

i agree with the guide what has this county got going for it? masses of traffic over inflated housing stock. crappy beaches. dirty water. flat and uninteresting terrain. loads of asylum seekers and southend that has to be one of the worst towns for access in the whole country. and ray howard should come and visit southend i would like him to point out some of the beautiful urban areas that i am clearly missing in this dump of a town.

I agree with Steeve.
However what Steeve doesn't know is that all LIB LAB CON politicians live in a parallell universe.
In the politicans world, Essex is still beutiful. All the people have unlimited money so taxing them doesn't matter. There is also unlimited land in Councillor Howard version of Essex so we can accomodate unlimited numbers of immigrants. The beer is free 24 hours a day seven days a week.
Councillor Howard needs to get out more. Essex has become a dump during the past 30 years during the Tories and Labour terms in office. The Lib Dems are also useless.

It was an unfair judgement to make on a whole County. Yes, there are bits that would be better buried - the same as any County in the UK, but equally there are some beautiful places if you know where to look. If you both think the County's such a dump, why are you still living here? Put up or shut up!

Steeve.... Just because Southend is a dump (and Basildon, Pitsea, Canvey, Tilbury, Grays etc.), doesn't mean the whole of Essex is. You need to get out a bit more & head North!
