FOUR people were arrested in Brentwood as police carried out an operation to reduce crime on the railways.

Police erected portable metal detectors at Brentwood station and stopped and searched passengers as they left trains and buses in Brentwood over the weekend.

The two-day operation, run in conjunction with British Transport Police and revenue inspectors, saw 86 people searched on Friday evening and 82 the following night.

Arrests were made for offences including drug possession and fare evasion.

Four dispersal orders were also issued over the weekend and quantities of cannabis were seized.

Officers were strategically positioned at various points within the railway station in Kings Road, and also at bus stops in the town centre to intercept the 498 bus service.

Chief Insp Keith Dobson hailed the operation as a success.

He commented: "Knife crime in the county is low compared to large cities and we are sending out a strong message to travelling criminals that we won't tolerate people carrying knives or intending to commit crime in our county.

"I have personally spoken to residents who fully support what we are doing.

"We are intent on denying thieves and other criminals the free use of trains and other public transport in order to prey on Essex residents and commuters.

"We will not cease in our determination to remove these people from our streets and make Essex a safe place to live and work."

The activity was part of Operation Effective, run at stations in Harlow, Harlow Mill, Buckhurst Hill and Loughton as well as Brentwood.
