YOBS caused extensive damage to a popular park in Brentwood on Halloween night.

Vandals went into the King George’s Playing Field, just off Ingrave Road, during the night of October 31, and defaced and broke a number of items.

During an inspection the following morning, officers from Brentwood Council discovered broken glass in the play areas and skatepark, and graffiti around the site.

A fence was also smashed and burnt, while signs from the park where ripped down.

Police are investigating the incident after being contacted by the council.

Mark Reed, councillor responsible for retail, community and culture, said: “I’m really angry such a great community facility has been damaged.

“I’m also really sad that the selfish behaviour of some will have an impact on many, like those young skateboarders who use the park every day.

“There was a lot damage caused and someone must have heard something.

“If you know anything about what happened, please let the police know straightaway – don’t let the vandals get away with it.”

Facilities at the park include playing fields for cricket, rugby, bowls and crazy golf.

Paddling pools are also in the park along with a sensory garden for blind and disabled people, along with other flower beds around the site.

An Essex Police spokesman said investigations into what happened at the park are continuing and would like witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact officers on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
