MOTORISTS had to be rescued from flood waters around Brentwood as they tried to celebrate festivities on Christmas Day.

Firefighters were called out to a number of incidents in the borough as heavy rainfall led to roads becoming flooded.

Crews helped in areas including Mount Avenue, Brentwood, were a drain burst causing water to flow out onto the street and Red Rose Lane in Blackmore were motorists had to be rescued after getting trapped.

Flood waters were so high in some parts of West Horndon even the firefighters could not travel through parts of the village.

More heavy rain is expected throughout Thursday, meaning roads could become flooded again.

Both Essex Fire and Rescue and Essex Police are advising drivers do not go through flood waters.
