Martin Bell supports new Brentwood First group
6:00am Friday 8th February 2013 in News
A FORMER independent MP has sent a message of support to the newly formed Brentwood First group.
Martin Bell, who represented Tatton in the House of Commons from 1997 to 2001, believes the party formation at Brentwood Council will benefit the town.
The former broadcast journalist, who stood against Eric Pickles for election in Brentwood and Ongar in 2001, said he hoped the group becomes a success story.
Mr Bell said: “The campaign of 2001 showed the potential for a strong Independent vote in Brentwood. The time may well be right for a new resurgence.
“I believe any community, certainly including Brentwood, can only benefit from the election of independent councillors answerable only to the people and not to a party.
“There is so much more to real democracy than the crack of the party whip. I wish the Brentwood independents the success they deserve.”
