Eric wants councils to become car friendly
7:00am Saturday 31st August 2013 in News
ERIC Pickles is calling for councils across the UK to become more car parking friendly.
The Brentwood and Ongar MP who is also the Communities and Local Government Secretary has said local planners are making it too difficult for drivers to park in town centres.
New guidance has been published, stating more spaces should be made available while “anti-car” measures such as road humps should be relaxed.
Mr Pickles said finding space to park has become an “obstacle” in too many towns and cities and this, along with “over zealous” parking wardens and car parking practices, is affecting the economy.
Keith Parker, Brentwood Council’s spokesman for parking, said as much as he backs what Mr Pickles has said, changes cannot simply happen overnight.
He said: “When it comes round to making a decision, if hypothetically we did go ahead with something like an hour’s free parking or half price parking, it would have to go in front of the whole council to see where we are going to get the money to replace the lost revenue.
“Whatever the Government says, it will not be a quick fix.”
