At last - mini roundabout is back
7:00am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
A ROUNDABOUT which had vanished at a busy Brentwood town centre junction has reappeared after much campaigning.
Workmen have repaired the mini-roundabout at Weald Road and Western Road which had eroded away over the past year.
The road was resurfaced and markings repainted, despite Essex County Council, which controls highways issues, saying earlier this month it felt the lines did not require immediate repairs.
Reports were first made to the authority last year about the state of the roundabout.
David Kendall, Lib Dem councillor for Brentwood South at County Hall, had repeatedly called for the issue to be fixed and said he was pleased to see action taken at last.
He also welcomed the council’s decision to repaint the road markings as part of the work.
Mr Kendall said: “Clearly, we made it very difficult for the council and it decided to take the common-sense approach in the end and bring a pot of paint.
“I still haven’t got to the bottom of what happened and why it took so long to repair. It’s now a lot safer for motorists, particularly those from outside the area.
“Taxpayers in Brentwood pay enough money through council tax to the county council and we need to start seeing more of a return.”
Bosses at the county council’s highways department said the reason why the repairs had taken so long was because they wanted to make sure the work was done at the right price.
They also said work on the line repainting had not been cancelled, as had been suggested by councillors who had called for the roundabout to be fixed.
A spokesman for the council said: “Following an assessment by Essex Highways, it was noted that remedial works were required due to a deterioration in the surface condition of the carriageway
“Before repairs take place, a ‘target costing’ exercise is undertaken to ensure the price of repairing the area is cost effective and is a good value which, as a process, takes time.”
