Odeon in talks over multiplex
10:00am Thursday 31st October 2013 in News
ODEON is in talks to take control of the multiplex within a major development in Brentwood town centre.
Weekly News sources have revealed the company is working with developers Stockland to occupy the cinema which is part of long-awaited multi-million pound plans for William Hunter Way.
Talks are currently going on between the developers and council bosses to get an agreement in place for the project by early December, when the deadline ends.
A source told the Weekly News: “Stockland is definitely talking to Odeon about the latter running the cinema at William Hunter Way. “Odeon are looking to get onboard.”
Finding a firm to run the cinema has proved problematic, and council leader Louise McKinlay said she could not confirm whether Odeon were involved in negotiations at this stage.
However, she did say builders should be starting work next year providing everything is agreed before Christmas.
Mrs McKinlay said: “We are still hopeful of meeting the December deadline with Stockland. If this development agreement does go ahead then we hope that they will be on site by July.
"We also hope to confirm shortly that a major name is going to take on the cinema complex."
When plans were initially agreed in 2007, the final deal date was set as June 2010, before later being extended to December 2011 and then again to December 2012. It is now December 7 this year.
Alongside the cinema complex, the proposals for the redevelopment include shops, a multi-storey car park and flats.
