A POPULAR pub has been protected from developers - and could now be bought up by residents.

Following a campaign, the Brave Nelson in Woodman Road, Warley, has become the first building in Brentwood to be listed as a community asset.

Under the Localism Act 2011 councils powers were given to list buildings which can be bought by community groups within six months of it being put up for sale.

Punters who use the pub want to make sure the venue stays as it is.

William Lloyd, Brentwood First councillor for Warley, who supported the nomination said it was fantastic to get the building on the list.

Mr Lloyd said: “It is not just a pub, it really is the hub and heartbeat for the community here.

“They now have the opportunity to make sure the building is kept in the community for what they want - that is a great thing.”

Council leader Louise McKinlay said the nomination is good and is supported by the authority.

Mrs McKinlay said: “I'm delighted that we are using the new powers from the government to put the pub on the community asset list.

“The Brave Nelson is very much at the heart of the community and this is a great example of localism and devolving power to the heart of our communities.”
