Stars of Lashings cricket team returning to Brentwood
Updated 2:02pm Wednesday 8th January 2014 in News
ICONIC cricket stars will return to Brentwood this year to play against a local team.
On July 11 the Lashings World XI are coming for the fourth year to face Brentwood Cricket Club at the Old County Ground on Shenfield Road in a one day match.
Formed in 1984, Lashings are a wandering side featuring former international cricketers.
Their sides at previous meeting with Brentwood have featured players like legendary West Indian fast bowler Courtney Walsh and ex-Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Huq.
Although the final side will not be announced until later this year, excitement is already building.
Brentwood chairman Paul Webb said: “There was a time over winter when we weren’t sure if the game would happen this year, but when I announced it was on the players were so pleased.
“It is exciting for our guys as the batters want to take on the Lashings bowlers while our bowlers want to get scalps.
“It is great too for spectators in the marquees and around the ground who are desperate to meet the stars, who always sign autographs.”
Entertainment will also be provided around the boundary with discussions being held considering the possibility of fans being able to face the stars themselves.
Mr Webb said: “I am talking to Lashings to see if we can use a couple of their players on the day for things like allow people to face an over from Courtney Walsh.
“I want it to be a big affair this year with as many cricket fans coming to watch and help our club get noticed.
“Lashings always come to play a good game rather than skittling a team out for 50, although we expect a few feisty players this year after we beat them comfortably by five wickets last time.”
