Part-time streetlight scheme delayed in Brentwood

A SCHEME to switch off streetlights in Brentwood between 12am and 5am every night has been delayed - again!

Originally the money-saving project being rolled out by Essex County Council which would see lights turned off in certain parts of the town was due to start on Monday, February 10.

However, the move was pushed back a week recently before County Hall bosses made another announcement saying it the switch-off would now happen on March 2.

This delay has angered opponents to the scheme including Brentwood South ward county councillor David Kendall.

The Lib Dem said there is also concern with maps of where the lights will be turned off not being made available, adding other alternatives should be considered.

Mr Kendall said: “Local Lib Dems are against the switch to part Night-time lighting in Brentwood because we have some serious concerns about possible increases in crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We are also very concerned about the state of many Brentwood roads that are littered with potholes and local footpaths that are very dangerous to walk on during the day never mind in the pitch black.

“We believe the county should be looking to invest in LED lighting which is much cheaper to operate in the long term.”

The county council did not respond to the Weekly News' request for a comment.
