JOEY Essex’s African antics in his new show were dubbed “comedy gold”.

Twitter was alive with comments following the first episode of Educating Joey Essex on Sunday night.

The TOWIE star, 23, from Brentwood, is featuring in a one-off documentary on ITV2 which will see him travel across the world - and learn a few lessons in life.

In the show Joey went to South Africa to experience life in Soweto and visit the Kruger National Park.

However it was his famously dimwitted thoughts and actions such as taking selfies with an elephant and trying to find Wifi in the African bush which entertained viewers most.

Many took to Twitter expressing their views including Chris Deal (@604chrisdeal), who said: “I can't believe that Joey Essex really is that dumb but it's comedy gold #EducatingJoey #ITV.”

Meanwhile, Kylie Wallen (@kylie_coburn) tweeted: “How funny was educating Joey... " #educatingjoey @JoeyEssex_ looking forward to next week!!”

Then on Monday, hundreds queued outside the High Chelmer Shopping Centre in Chelmsford to meet Joey who was signing copies of a dance compilation album Joey Essex Presents Essex Anthems.
