A MAN suffering from mental health difficulties took his own life at Brentwood railway station.

Neil Roeper, 51, who lived in the town, was suffering from bi-polar disorder when he went missing from his home on February 10.

His wife had spent much of the morning looking for him and as her concern for his whereabouts grew, she reported him missing.

Unbeknown to her, British Transport Police were dealing with a fatal incident at Brentwood station. The body of the man involved was later identified as that of Mr Roeper.

He had jumped in front of a train and police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

A post-mortem examination found he died of multiple injuries.

Mr Roeper had been on medication for his mental health difficulties – of which the post-mortem examination found he had recently taken “therapeutic levels.”

In a letter submitted to the coroner as evidence, Mr Roeper’s wife revealed he had a long history of mental health difficulties.

An inquest into his death was held in Chelmsford last week.

Caroline Beasley-Murray, senior coroner for Essex, said: “Mr Roeper had a long history of mental health difficulties, including bi-polar disorder.

“I am of the view that Mr Roeper intended to take his own life, that he formed the intention and took a deliberate action.

“Sadly, he killed himself while suffering from a diagnosed mental health condition.”
