A FIRE in a 5,000-ton woodpile is still burning, more than SEVEN weeks after it started.

And it is thought the fire – which began on August 18 – could continue for weeks yet.

One fire engine remains at the site of the fire on an industrial estate, in Thoby Lane, Mountnessing, overseeing a controlled burn.

An announcement is expected this week on how the fire service intends to tackle the blaze in the future.

At a fire authority meeting last month, measures such as accelerating the burning process by moving the scrap timber around were considered.

But this has disadvantages, such as creating more smoke, as well as incurring additional costs with machine hire, so the idea was dismissed.

Employing security guards to protect the burn has also been considered.
