TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved member of the Brentwood arts scene, who passed away recently, aged 84.

Valerie Hilton, who was honororay president of the Brentwood Operatic Society, had been battling cancer.

She had given more than 65 years of service to the popular society and in recent years had been a friendly face at the front of house for the society’s shows and described as a “true asset”.

Her funeral took place at St Peter’s, in South Weald, recently.

Tributes have been paid by the MP Eric Pickles, her fellow operatic society members and by other art organisations in Brentwood.

Posting on the Brentwood Operatic Society’s Facebook page, Clare Markey said: “RIP Valerie Hilton – president of BOS, who we said goodbye to today. Her contribution to the running of the society cannot be measured, it was so great. She will be sorely missed.”

Brentwood and Ongar MP Mr Pickles tweeted: “Very sorry to learn of the death of Valerie Hilton, who gave so much to Brentwood.”

And a statement on the Brentwood Theatre Facebook page, the venue where the operatic society is preparing to put on its next production, Godspell, next month, said: “In recent years, Valerie was known for her efficient handling of all things front of house, including ticketing, programmes and raffles and was ever-present whenever Brentwood Operatic Society were performing, gently welcoming everyone who came through the door.

“From dance teacher to musical director, Valerie contributed so much to Brentwood Operatic Society and to Marlborough Dramatic Club, and therefore to the artistic life in Brentwood, and will be sorely missed.”
