PLANS for 27 retirement flats in Herongate could benefit a primary school, if given the go-ahead.

An application to Brentwood Council from London-based Alliance Planning would see the development built on land owned by Hillcrest Nurseries in Brentwood Road, and in turn create a number of new facilities for Ingrave Johnstone Church of England Primary School next door – including an extended playground and increased visitor parking.

A new access road would also be built for the flats and school, including emergency access and school gates.

The school currently has seven classrooms and about 250 pupils.

The independent-living flats would consist of eight one-bedroom properties and 19 two-bedroom ones. Each would contain a kitchen, bathroom and living room.

In total, nearly £850,000 would be spent on school works, including £100,000 to help towards the cost of a new school building.
