Works are due to start next week on repairs to Brentwood High Street.
The first phase of works, focusing on replacing damaged kerbs, will begin on Tuesday and take place in the evenings and overnight for two weeks.
Heavier work will be carried out from 5.30pm to 10pm to minimise congestion, disruption to local businesses and noise for residents, while lighter work will continue through the night until 6am the following morning.
The second phase of works, carriageway resurfacing and block paving replacement, will take place during the summer holidays, and again during the night, to limit the impact on residents and businesses.
A diversion will be in place via William Hunter Way to help local traffic avoid the high street where possible.
Two-way temporary traffic signals will operate in the immediate vicinity of the works as they move in sections along the high street.
A signed diversion will also direct traffic onto sections of Ongar Road, William Hunter Way and Weald Road.
An Essex County Council spokesman said: “We are working at night to minimise disruption for residents and businesses as much as possible, but drivers should plan to avoid possible delays in the High Street area.
"We would urge motorists to seek alternative routes avoiding Brentwood High Street whenever possible, while we work to improve the condition of the road for all users.”
