BRENTWOOD traders are concerned repairs to the High Street, which started this week, will soon need repeating.

The first phase of the works, focused on replacing damaged kerbs, will take place in the evenings for two weeks, while the second phase, carriageway resurfacing and pavement replacement, will take place during the summer holidays.

But Nigel Clarke, 49, who owns the Hair Company, in Crown Street, believes the work will need to be repeated. He explained: “There is a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes, but you see lorries weighing 20 tonnes coming down and the road isn’t meant to take that.

“When they pull up to unload, you can see pavement breaking.

“Unless that limit is enforced, there are going to be constant problem.”

Lin Heath, owner of French Quarter, in Crown Street, added: “It’s obvious the work needs to be done as it’s quite dangerous, but it’s not that long since it was done before.”

A diversion will be in place via William Hunter Way.

Two-way temporary traffic signals will also operate in the immediate vicinity of the works.

A signed diversion will also direct traffic on to sections of Ongar Road, William Hunter Way and Weald Road.

An Essex County Council spokesman said: “We are working at nightto minimise disruption for residents and businesses.”
