A PAIR of identical twins celebrated their 100th birthday yesterday.

Millie Lambert and Ruby Lister weren’t given much hope of survival when they first born. Though the family don’t know their exact weight, both weighed between 2.5 and three pounds when born.

Because of their size, the doctor said to their mum at the time she’d never raise them. The story passed around the family since is that they had brandy applied around their lips, and now, 100 years later they are still alive and well.

The pair celebrated their 100th birthday yesterday in Grays with a “tipple” surrounded by their families.

They got together for celebrations at the Piggs Corner Complex off Southend Road, Grays, where Ruby lives.

Millie lives at Oak House care home in Stanford-le-Hope. Both were also having separate celebrations with extended family late in the day.

Born in Shenfield, the close sisters have lived through both World Wars, even working for a company in Brentwood making film for reconnaissance planes during the Second World War.

They both boast a long line of family members. Ruby has two children, four grandchildren and eight great children. Mille also has two children, six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

So, what is their secret to a long, happy life? Holding her card from the Queen, Millie said: “Look after yourself, and have a tipple!”

Ruby’s son Terrance Fortis said it was an amazing occasion to see them both together.

He said: “My greatest wish when my mum turned 98 was to see her reach 100. Now she has I’m just pleased as punch.”

With a tear in his eye, he added: “To get to that age is an amazing achievement.”

A favourite mischievous story passed around the family was that of the pair in their younger days swapping partners when they went out dancing, with their opposite being none the wiser.

Millie’s son Ivan added: “Mum has always said her secret is a little drink and that you should get on with everyone. That, and don’t argue!”
