I’VE always seen the Slug and Lettuce as a place to enjoy a gin and tonic or a beer, rather than a sit down meal, but I’ve now reconsidered.

A vast food menu provides lots of variety and many options for those looking to indulge, and plenty of healthy choices too.

We opted for a mixture of the two and shared a huge bread and beetroot houmous starter, and a portion of crispy potato wedges with bacon and cheese, which came out steaming hot and kept us going until our mains.

As I’m trying to stick to a New Year’s diet, the kitchen was kind enough to serve my medium rare rib-eye steak with a portion of salad rather than the chips, while my boyfriend, who chose fish and chips, was delighted he could have sweet potato fries instead of normal chips.

All the food was served promptly and decently priced, while the quirky, luxurious decor of the restuarant makes for a classy dining experience.

The lovely waitresses and bar staff ensured we were happy throughout our meal and made sure our wine glasses were topped up too.

Sadly, we were both too full for dessert, but the menu looks like it serves some delicious options and I look forward to trying them next time.

The bar and restaurant, located opposite the Meadows Shopping Centre in Chelmsford, definitely surpassed all my expectations and I don't think it will be long until our next visit.
