CHEERS and rounds of applause echoed around the Brentwood Centre as successful candidates were congratulated during the 2016 Brentwood Borough Council election.

The Conservatives held the council, winning seven seats and resulting in an overall majority of 11, while the Lib Dems won four seats and Labour and an Independant won one seat each.

Elections were held in Brentwood North, Brentwood South, Brentwood West, Brizes and Doddinghurst, Hutton Central, Hutton North, Hutton South, Ingatestone, Fryerning and Mountnessing, Pilgrims Hatch, Shenfield, Tipps Cross and Warley.

One seat was contested in all wards except Tipps Cross, where there were two, after Conservative Madeline Henwood announced she would step down as councillor.

There were several colour changes across the borough as Conservative candidate James Tumbridge claimed victory over the Lib Dems in Shenfield with 1016 votes while Lib Dem's Nigel Clarke won Warley from the Conservatives with 771 votes.

Conservative Mark Reed, the current Mayor of Brentwood retained his seat in Hutton South with 691 votes while Conservative Louise McKinlay, the current leader of Brentwood Borough Council, was also re-elected in Hutton North with 790 votes.

In Brentwood West Lib Dem's Karen Chilvers retained her seat with 886 votes, while Alison Fulcher held Brentwood North for the Lib Dems with 966 votes and Labour kept its hold on Brentwood South with 486 votes for Julie Morrissey.

In Brizes and Doddinghurst Roger McCheyne held on to his seat for the Conservatives with 963 votes while fellow Conservative John Kerslake retained his seat in Hutton Central with 623 votes.

The Ingatestone, Fryerning and Mountnessing ward elected Conservative Thomas Bridge with 1,000 votes while Lib Dem David Kendall held on to his seat in Pilgrims Hatch with 960 votes.

There were two seats up for grabs in Tipps Cross, who elected Roger Keeble with 687 votes and Aimi Middlehurst for the Conservatives with 498 votes.
