AFTER Liz Fox suffered a mental breakdown in 2014 - forcing her to quit her job - her focus shifted to overcoming the depression and anxiety that haunted her.

But two years on, the avid baker and cake decorator mustered the courage to help others, by bringing the Depressed Cake Shop to Chelmsford.

A place where those affected by mental illness discussed their issues over cake and tea, the event attracted throngs of guests to the County Cricket Ground on Sunday, August 7.

Mrs Fox, owner of Chelmsford cake company BuBakes, said: “We had a fantastic day, with such a range of people. There were families with young children, people on their own, teenagers bringing their parents and everyone in between.

“We had bakes brought to us by lots of Chelmsford residents, some professional bakers and some hobby bakers.

“There was face-printing, bag making, talks about using essential oils to help with mental health, and a lend-a-hand station - where people drew around their hand and wrote a message inside, and a lot of cakes.”

By selling cakes coloured grey with a splash of colour alongside limited edition tea towels, £400 was made for charity.

It will be split between mental health charity Mind and Help for Heroes.

The tea towels continue to sell via the BuBakes website, where all profits will continue to go to charity.
