Nurse warned over operation chaos

A NURSE has been cautioned for causing chaos during an operation.

Sushila Nagrani’s actions at Nuffield Hospital, Brent-wood, could have led to swabs being sewn into a patient’s body, the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard.

Nagrani, 57, from Basildon, was found guilty of failing to record the number of swabs used, of making an improper instrument count, and of failing to do a proper handover.

She was given a caution which will remain on her record for five years.

Colleague Eileen Price told the hearing, when she walked into theatre on July 19, 2005, it was in complete disarray.

She said: “There’s chaos when you lose a swab. It gets frantic, particularly where there’s a discrepancy in the count.”

Franklyn Baker, the panel’s chairman, said Nagrani had shown a “cavalier attitude”.
