Plan your Olympic torch relay route

EVERYONE is urged to line the streets and cheer on the torchbearers and Olympic flame as the relay makes its way through the borough.

A gold theme has been adopted for the day so people are encouraged to decorate their homes, don fancy dress and make up to really get into the spirit of this once in a lifetime event.

It will start at 5.41pm in Rectory Lane, Herongate, and will progress up Brentwood Road, finishing at 5.55pm in Common Road, Ingrave. The torch will then be taken by car to The Avenue, in Brentwood.

While it is in convoy, between Common Road and The Avenue, the public will not be able to see the flame, but the best view of it at this stage will be on the left hand side of the road.

Torchbearers will then resume the relay at 5.58pm in Brentwood.

It will move along Ingrave Road and Shenfield Road before it finishes at 6.21pm in Middleton Road.

Signs detailing rolling road closures are already up in the areas that will be effected, but the closures will begin about ten to 15 minutes ahead of the torch convoy. This is expected to last for around 3 0minutes until the convoy has passed.

While the flame is carried by torchbearers, the convoy will travel at about 4mph and all entries on to the route will be closed to traffic until it has passed.

Police, traffic marshals and stewards will be positioned along the route to offer advice, help and directions.

Delays, particularly on the roads, are expected so people wanting to catch a glimpse of the relay are encouraged to allow plenty of time to get to their desired location, this includes public transport.

Due to the large crowds expected, walking or cycling to the event using off road routes is also advised where possible.

All parking, including Blue Badge parking, will be restricted on the main route and in some side roads. Parking officers will also be working on the day and any vehicle considered to be a risk or hazard along the route will be towed away.
