Businesses asked over free parking plan

FREE parking in the lead-up to Christmas could be axed in Brentwood and replaced with dates throughout the year.

Brentwood Council is asking businesses about free parking in the town centre in the lead up to the festive period.

In the past the council has offered free parking in the multi-storey car park for three Saturdays before Christmas to help boost the number of shoppers.

The council has said retailers believe shoppers will come into the town centre before Christmas regardless of free parking and the perk would be more useful after the festive season.

The authority is seeking views from High Street shops and restaurants by August 31 and in response to the feedback, the council is considering changing when free parking is provided.

The new dates could be, free parking on December 1, to coincide with the town centre Christmas celebrations, before Valentine’s Day – on February 9 – to coincide with a ‘Love Brentwood’ promotion and in March to coincide with a new outdoor restaurant event proposed for the town centre.

Mike Le-Surf, Brentwood South councillor, is a doubter.
