Fan attacked at football match

A FOOTBALL fan was attacked as he left a stadium following a match involving Brentwood Town on Saturday.

The incident happened at the Walton Stadium, in Walton-on-Thames, at about 5.40pm as spectators exited after the FA Trophy first qualifying round game between Walton & Hersham and Brentwood.

The victim, believed to be in his 30s and a supporter of the home side, was assaulted near to the main gate as he was leaving the stadium about an hour after the match, won 2-1 by the visitors, had finished.

A 45-year-old and a 47-year-old man, both from Essex, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: “We cannot confirm at this stage whether the arrested men were Brentwood fans, but we can confirm they were both from Essex.”

Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment to the head injuries he received.

Sgt Nev Parsons, one of the investigating officers from Surrey Police, has urged any supporters at the match to come forward and help with the force’s investigations.

Sgt Parsons said: “I would appeal to anyone who attended the match between Walton and Brentwood today and who witnessed the assault or the events leading up to it to contact officers with information.

“There were plenty of people in the vicinity at the time of the assault which has left the victim requiring treatment in hospital and we need to bring those responsible to justice.”

The suspects have been released on conditional bail until October 25 while the investigation continues.

Anyone with information about the assault or the events leading up to it should contact Surrey Police by calling 101 and quoting reference P12286342.
