MORE than 100 homemade spiders and their webs now adorn a 400-year-old tree in Langdon Hills Country Park.

Education rangers from the park have been visiting local Rainbows, Cubs, Guides and Scout groups in recent weeks to make spiders from old yoghurt pots and pipe cleaners.

They all came together to take part in the ancient art of tree dressing, which has since led to modernday custom of Christmas tree decorating.

Now in its 22nd year, the children were led by Morris dancers to dress the ancient oak tree with their homemade spiders and webs.

Education ranger Nicola Croft said: “We like to dress the tree with a nature theme, something that is found outside.

“Creating spiders and their webs seemed a perfect idea to keep the old custom of tree-dressing going.”
