A driver was cut free from his vehicle by fire crews after a road accident in Basildon.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Gardiners Lane South, Basildon, shortly after 6am today.

Fire crews from Basildon and Rayleigh Weir used cutting equipment to release a casualty, who was trapped in their car, by 6.40am.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was treated by ambulance crews for suspected neck and back injuries.

He was taken to Basildon Hospital for further assessment, but his injuries are not believed to be serious, an East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said.

Gardiners Lane South remains partially blocked, between the roundabout at Christopher Martin Road and Gardiners Way, as the vehicles await recovery.
