Police recovered numerous stolen cars and hundreds of car components when they searched an industrial unit at Wickford.

Officers went to the site at Robert Way on Friday March 13 after a suspected stolen car had earlier been seen nearby.

During a search of the unit officers found a number of cars that had been stolen in Essex in recent months. One section of the building was full of engines, gearboxes, body panels and other car components.

No one was found at the unit but detectives are now carrying out an investigation into a suspected criminal ‘car slaughter’ operation in which vehicles are stolen and stripped so that parts can be sold.

About 70 cannabis plants were also seized after they were found growing in another part of the industrial unit.

Officers from the Essex Police Stolen Vehicle Squad and Basildon CID are investigating and anyone with information about activities at the unit should contact Pc James Cunningham or Dc Emma Henderson at Basildon on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
