CHELMSFORD MP Simon Burns has emphasised the need for new trains to be rolled out on the commuter line between Essex and London.

Mr Burns is part of the Great Eastern Main Line Taskforce, which is looking at ways the Government can invest and improve rail services in the east of England.

The group recently met Transport Secretary PatrickMcLoughlin to discuss ideas and present him with their business case.

Mr Burns said: “I told the Secretary of State that it was crucial the franchise document included a commitment to new rolling stock for our commuter services into London and that more be done to increase capacity, which could be achieved by introducing a loop to the north of Chelmsford.”

A new rail franchise holder for the line is set to be announced next year, when Abellio Greater Anglia’s contract expires.
