A road in Chelmsford city centre was closed following reports of an explosion at an electricity sub station.
Police and fire engines attended the junction of New Street and Victoria Road.
Essex Police confirmed it had closed Victoria Road at the request of Essex County Fire and Rescue.
A fire service spokesman said: "Fire crews were called to reports of an explosion at a substation, when crews arrived smoke was coming from the substation.
"The substation was intact and crews stood by as the electrical company isolated the power supply.
"Crews completed their work by 3.41pm and the incident was left in the care of the electrical company."
Cottage Place had been cordoned off, next to the Wheatsheaf pub.
The Essex Traffic Control Centre reported Victoria Road was closed in both directions between the railway station and New Street.
