A MOTORCYCLIST was filmed riding at 148mph on a busy motorway while carrying a passenger on the back of his bike.

Police have released footage of the shocking incident on the M11 after Paul Roberts, 43, admitted dangerous driving.

He was followed and filmed by an Essex Police motorcycle officer as he rode his Kawasaki ZZR 1400 London-bound on the motorway on Friday, September 12 last year.

His top speed is the highest ever recorded in the UK by a rider carrying passenger, according to the police.

Roberts, from Harlow, was banned from driving for 15 months after pleading guilty during an appearance at Chelmsford Crown Court.

He has also ordered to complete 120 hours community services, fined £400 and ordered to pay costs of £460.

Sergeant Nick Edwards, from the Essex Police motorcycle unit, said: "The levels of harm to which Paul Roberts subjected himself, his pillion passenger, the public and my officer are just beyond comprehension.

"These speeds are for race tracks not public roads. This riding behaviour will not be tolerated on Essex roads and the court have clearly recognised the consequences of the rider's actions in the punishment that has been awarded."

Roberts, who runs a taxi firm in London, joined the M11 at Hastingwood as he made his way to work with a friend.

He was spotted and followed by Pc Paul Hills, who was involved in a motorcycle safety operation on the motorway.

A video camera attached to the police officer's bike recorded him weaving across all three lanes, and even riding through a narrow gap between a lorry and a car.

Roberts was eventually stopped near Chigwell, after travelling for about 11 miles.
