A MUM wants to thank the kind strangers who rushed to help her daughter and comforted their dying dog when he was hit in by car.

Louise Howlett, 23, was walking her family’s Lhasa-Poo Oscar and Labradoodle Alfie, in Copperfield Road, Chelmsford, when three-year-old Oscar was struck.

Sarah Howlett, Louise’s mum, said: “He was being walked in the woods, but chased a squirrel and ran into the road.

“He didn’t stand a chance and I don’t blame the drivers, but they didn’t even stop, they just drove straight off.”

Oscar died of his injuries soon after the collision and Ms Howlett, 50, wants to thank the strangers who rushed to her daughter’s aid and comforted Oscar in his dying moments.

Ms Howlett, of Peggotty Close, Chelmsford, said: “By the time I got there, about six people were helping.

“One couple were sitting with Oscar, keeping him warm with their coats and stroking and talking to him, while others were comforting Louise and trying to catch Alfie, who had panicked and slipped his collar in a panic.

“Another lady got us a dog bed from her car to use as a stretcher and they had called the vets to let them know we were coming.

“They were all so lovely and thoughtful during a terrible time.

“Oscar was so special. Louise and her sister, Samantha, had bought him for me as a puppy when I was having chemotherapy for breast cancer – they had seen how depressed I was but from the moment we got him he made me smile every day.

“To lose him like this is devastating, but the people who helped Oscar and my daughter were so kind and it really makes you realise that there are good people still out there.

“I just wanted to thank them as at the time of the chaos it just wasn’t possible.

“It is a very hard time for us to deal with the tragic accident but their kindness was suchacomfort.”
