POLICE stopped and checked more than 130 vehicles during its latest clampdown, during Operation Surround A Town in Chelmsford on Wednesday (August 10).

Offenders were identified by patrolling officers or via Automatic Number Plate technology before their vehicles were escorted to check sites at Riverside Leisure Centre and Boreham services, off the A12.

During the crackdown:

  • 2 uninsured vehicles were seized
  • 13 vehicles had no MOT 
  • 41 drivers were using mobile phones
  • 47 people were not using seat belts
  • 2 drivers were stopped for speeding.
  • 5drivers were reported for careless driving
  • 4 HGV drivers were reported for hours offences.

A man was also arrested on suspicious of the theft of a motorcycle.

The MOT offenders were each given £100 fixed penalty notices and those stopped for seat belt, mobile phone and speeding offences were referred to driver retraining courses.

Twenty other motoring offences were dealt with and various verbal warnings were issued.

The operation was part of Essex County Council’s No Excuse campaign to tackle motoring offences and raise awareness about road safety.
