POLICE are sending postcards to prolific criminals urging them to stay on the right side of the law.

Three hundred postcards will be sent to custody suites in Essex and another 300 will be given to criminals just released from prison. urging them to stay away from crime.

The postcards also point recipients to organisations which can offer guidance in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, employment, housing and mental health.

Chief inspector David Colwell believes some offenders can turn their lives around with the right support.

He said: “We know some criminals make definitive choices and actively pursue a life crime.

“Others get drawn into a life of crime as a consequence of dropping out of education, falling in with the wrong crowd or stealing to fund a habit.

“Many of these people don’t want to be living in constant fear of being arrested or always looking over their shoulder. With the right support, we can help them.”
