FITNESS fanatics are being urged to sign up for a triathlon that will fund improvements to towpaths along a picturesque waterway.

The Waterways Triathlon, which takes place on Sunday, September 25, involves canoeing, cycling and running either a 30km or 50km route along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, which runs from Chelmsford to Heybridge Basin.

The event, which starts at Hoe Mill Lock, is being run by The Inland Waterways Association, which has managed the waterway as a not-for-profit enterprise since 2005.

In February, a group of volunteers restored nearly a kilometre of towpath, and they hope the triathlon will help fund improvements to a further kilometre in October.

Roy Chandler, Chairman of Essex Waterways, said: “Walkers, runners, cyclists and anybody who has tried to push a wheelchair or buggy along the path will appreciate the improvement our volunteers have achieved.”
