A WONDERFUL night of glamour, excitement and music was enjoyed by all when Jools Holland took to the stage at the Chelmsford City Racecourse.

It was the first time I have ever visited the racecourse, which is situated just outside Chelmsford at Great Leighs, but I had high expectations for the event, which would see popular musican Jools Holland take to the stage alongside his famous Rhythm and Blues Orchestra after an evening of horse racing.

We had a blustery start to our day at the races; all glammed up in our nice dresses and high heels we had a long walk down from the main car park and entrance.

It didn't take too long but I would definitely recommend wearing flat or easy-to-walk-in shoes, particularly as a fair amount of the venue is on grass - no one wants their stilettos to sink!

On our arrival we were greeted and offered the chance to attend that night's after party, which would include a DJ and bar so decided to upgrade our tickets for an additional £10.

There were plenty of places to eat and drink, including a sports bar and outdoor stands, and we had very little queuing to do.

Cocktails and glasses of Pimms were about £7.50 per person and food was similar prices so I'd be prepared to be a little bit flash with the cash if you are planning on having a few drinks but the food was really enjoyable and worth spending the money on.

Watching the racing was brilliant; there was plenty of room to view the track and big television screens as well plus lots of desks where you could place a bet.

I've never been a gambling girl but we had a little flutter - all of £5 - but even when you did not have a runner in the race it was impossible not to get excited watching the horses race around and spectators cheer on their favourites.

After the racing the stage was set for Jools Holland to entertain the crowd.

The concert was superb; set on a grassy area of the venue there was plenty of room for visitors to have a bit of a dance if they desired and it was easy to see, hear and get close to the stage.

Mr Holland was wonderful and if he ever returns to the city I will be first in line to get a ticket - the set was packed with old favourites, new music and special guests and got the whole crowd roaring with excitement.

The after party following the concert saw Heart DJ Matt Mackay keep the crowd dancing until the early hours and was well worth the additional ticket.
