New police sticker scheme for bikes

POLICE have developed new stickers that cannot be removed to mark bikes.

The stickers will be used to help identify stolen bikes and return them to their owners.

The new system will stop police having to mark the chassis of bikes.

Community safety sergeant Andy McFarlane said: “At this time of year when children are going back to school it is important to be safety conscious with your bikes.

“We recover a lot of stolen bikes, but it is very difficult to get them back to their owners.

“People will be able to pick up these stickers from Clacton police station and they are really easy to apply.”

Really ?. Is there a huge list of accidents caused by cyclists ?. Nope, whereas there is a huge crime problem involving stolen bikes.

I think the only bit of pavement cyclists are allowed to use in the town centre is where there is a signposted cycle route across the area by the fountain between Station Road and the junction of West Avenue with Pier Avenue (although last time I looked one of the signs had been vandalised). The cyclists who ride on pavements or without lights are a minority, but still annoying.

itsalltomuch You are getting of the subject and targeteting cyclists, How about i say OLD folk like you who cut up cyclists in there cars or ELDERLY who have free bus passes and still want a SCOOTER to tear up shops displays and drive iliegally on Roads ? I choose to cycle on the road for Pedestrian to just walk out without looking cos you are to busy talking crap to your mates on your phones, I choose to save petrol and get fit unlike you smokin weed and drinking round the fountains at 10am .

Correct cyclists should obey the Highway Code, they are subject to the law like any other road user. Notice I say ROAD user, cycles are for use on roads and cycle paths NOT pavements, wrong way up one way streets, zebra crossings and red traffic lights. Adequate lights should be used and an audible arning device should be fitted and used where appropriate. Come on cyclists live by the law and be fair in society, don't carry on being aggressive and selfish.

All we need now is actual Police out and about to find and recover the stolen bikes. Good idea to have stickers, available at bike shops or just at Police Stations that are only open at certain times?? Nothing that a bit of paint/Hammerite can't sort!

Speaking as a cyclist and a driver. I will cycle on a pavement if it is safe to do so, that is, if there are no pedestrians. Many roads are too narrow for a driver to pass a cyclist safely, and will often mean that traffic gets held up.

It may be illegal to cycle on the pavement, but it's also illegal to use a pram on the pavement.

Pedestrians chatting on their phones or using iPods, are much more of a danger.

isalltomuch - you are totally right and everyone else on here is thick, ignorant, lawbreakers or all three. There are thouasands of seerious injuries and deaths every year suffered by pedestrians because you cyclists ILLEGALLY cycle on pavements and ILLEGALLY go through red lights ALL THE TIME. Cyclists are a danger to society and I will continue to push cyclists off their vehicles if you get in my way again on a pavement or go through red light when i am crossing and i hope your injuries hurt like hell many of your victims dont live to tell theire tales

OK time to grow up. Firstly, anything on the roads is a danger and this report was not about accident rates of which we are all aware there are many. Motorbikes and cyclists normally coming off the worst. There are lots of responsible people out there and the police have offered stickers to bike owners so when they do discover a stolen bike they can return it to it's rightful owner. Perhaps if everyone put a sticker on their bike they would have a fair chance of getting it back. How will you feel if your bike gets stolen? Would you have wished you had put a sticker on it in the hopes it would be found. Think how expensive bikes are these days.

It has been a few years since I rode a bike but don't they have frame numbers anymore. You used to take note of this unique number and if you was unfortunate enough to have your bike stolen you could report it to the police so should they find it they could return it to you.
