CHRISTMAS is set to come to come to Brentwood when the lights are switched on in the town.

Lighting Up Brentwood will take place on December 1 with festivities going on in and around the High Street from 12noon to 6pm.

The lights will be turned on at 5pm by mayor Ann Coe and the child winner of Brentwood Council’s Christmas card design competition.

Entertainment on the day will include music being performed by bands on the main stage at Wilson’s Corner and reindeer being brought to Crown Street.

Performances will also be provided on the streets by tap-dancing turkeys and snowball sprites who will roam around Brentwood while the Christmas Window Competition will kick off as well.

Mark Reed, councillor responsible for business, community and culture, said: ““I am very excited about this year’s Lighting Up Brentwood.

“We have lots going on and everyone in the family’s going to have fun.

“I would like to thank the very generous local shops, groups and businesses who have made it all possible.”

Children will be able to participate in a secret Santa christmas treasure hunt which will see youngsters searching around shops in the High Street for clues.

Council bosses are also searching for Olympic gamesmakers who would like to put on their uniforms back on to help steward the event.

The day is supported by Federation of Small Businesses, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Brentwood Rotary Club, Sugar Hut, local Street Pastors and Churches Together, Baytree Centre and Crown Street shops.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the lighting up event should contact the council by emailing lightingup@brentwood.gov.uk or call 01277 312644.
