COMMUTERS want more investment in train services after stats showed passenger numbers in Brentwood and Shenfield are rising.

Figures released by the Office of Rail Regulation show in 2012/13 just over 3.1million used Shenfield while 2.7million passenger used Brentwood.

Both are increases compared to the previous 12 months when 2.9million people came through Shenfield and just under 2.5million came through the doors at Brentwood.

Stuart Wilks, who commutes from Brentwood into London, said the amount of people using the stations has been noticeable.

The Brentwood Bus and Rail Users Association member feels it is time for Greater Anglia and Network Rail to invest more into their services to improve customer experience.

Mr Wilks said: “It's indicative of the continuing trend which has been consistent in recent years.

“More and more people are relying on the train and as the economy recovers, passenger numbers will only increase.

“Trains are busier and companies such as Greater Anglia enjoy the benefit of a revenue increase.

“But passengers have seen numerous delays and Network Rail seem to only invest the bare minimum in a creaking infrastructure which is stretched to breaking point on a daily basis.”

Bosses from Greater Anglia said they committed to looking at ways to invest at both the stations.

A spokeswoman said: “Since taking over the franchise in February 2012, we have improved punctuality and continued to invest in our stations and services.

“Network Rail are also investing in Brentwood station, in a £2.7m project, which is part of the national 'Access for All' programme, which includes the installation of new lifts making it easier for passengers to move around the station.”

Network Rail chiefs said they are investing £2billion in Anglia over the next five years and will always look to make improvements.
