They are certainly a friendly bunch in the “Slug” as it’s affectionately known.
I’ve been in the bar a few times over the years, but until now had never eaten there.
The new menu, introduced this summer, is big on variety. A good thing. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Another good thing. But what about the food...
I went for the breaded mushrooms for starters, while my wife Katy went for the potato wedges. Now I warn you, make sure you’re hungry if you go wedges.
This was, without a doubt, the biggest starter I has ever come across. In fact, it was more a good lunch for two, than a starter.
Katy got about a quarter way through before I was needed to charge in. They came with cheese and bacon (which is optional) creme fraiche and spring onion dip and barbeque sauce. I prefered my breaded mushrooms which were small, plentiful and incredibly crisp.
It was a hot afternoon and I fancied something light, and out of the ordinary, for my main and the Chicken Souvlaki caught my eye.
A chicken breast soon arrived marinated in lemon and olive oil, pierced on two skewers accompanied with red onion and and mixed peppers. I eagerly stuffed these in some flatbread I had covered in houmous (with rocket pesto). It had a crème fraîche & spring onion dressing too.
It was delicious, perfect for a light lunch...or late dinner after those wedges!
Katy went for lasagne, it came with toasted artisan bread strips – which were huge. There were no complaints from her, just compliments.
To finish off I went for Sticky Toffee Pudding and Katy had a Cookie Cup Explosion, which I liked the look of too.
My pud was a good size and incredibly sweet, it came with thick, hot custard - although Vanilla ice cream is an option if you prefer.
It was good, but played second fiddle to the explosion which came with a delicious cookie biscuit base, filled to the brim with chocolate brownie, marshmallow pieces and chocolate honeycomb. All this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Wow. What a finale.
If I’m honest the Slug has not really been on my radar where food is concerned. Fear not, it will be from now on.
