SPEED signs outside a Hutton school are to finally be installed... thanks to a little help from the Weekly News.

Two vehicle-activated signs were agreed to be put outside St Martin’s School, on Hanging Hill Lane, in July last year, following an anti-speed campaign led by resident Bal Chhokar after a pupil was knocked over by a car.

It’s taken to now however for the signs to get anywhere near competition, after Mr Chhokar contacted the Weekly News to say nothing had happened in the school year since.

Essex Highways confirmed the signs will be installed by October at the latest.

The road has a 30mph speed limit, but observers say cars regularly tear down the road at much faster speeds, often during school time.

Mr Chhokar, 47, of Hall Green Lane, Hutton, said: “It’s been with the design team since last year, so I don’t know why it’s taken them so long to have them implemented.

“There are already signs in place to warn people there’s a school and a crossing on the road, but drivers don’t seem to pay much attention to it. I’m now trying to get those signs moved further up the road.

“The more people that see the signs the better and that will have a big impact in the long run.”

Mr Chhokar said in the last school year police carried out speed checks on the road during term time and in one day caught 55 vehicles throughout school hours speeding down the road.

A spokesperson for Essex Highways said: “We can confirm that the vehicle activated signs at Hanging Hill Lane are scheduled to be installed by mid-September. We are also exploring ways in which this date might be brought forward before the start of the new school term.”
