PUPILS trapsing into school with their shoes coated in mud should now be a thing of the past after a grant paid for a new path to be laid.

The Assizes Trust and Essex County Council stumped up the funds for a new cedar path outside Brentwood County High School, meaning members of the public and the school's pupils can walk to town or towards Cornsland without collecting large, wet swathes of soggy earth.

In recent years, the path leading up to the High Street and down to Cornsland had deteriorated so much that when it rained, the path became a muddy, stodgy mess.

Stephen Drew, the school's headteacher, said: "Muddy feet at BCHS have been a fixture for a very long time.

"I am delighted that with the significant financial support of Essex County Council and Brentwood Borough Council we have been able to put in our beautiful new path.

"We worked closely with the Shenfield Common Conservators to install this facility for the whole community. Sometimes the seemingly small things can make a profound difference."

Brentwood Borough Council are trustees of The Assizes Trust which was set up in 1860 to provide funds for the general improvement of the High Street and surrounding area.
